The Golden Rule

Buy a certified helmet new, and fit it with her hair styled the way she'll wear it for games. A helmet fit over a bare head and then worn over a bulky bun or braid will sit too high and shift on impact.

Helmets must carry HECC certification. Never buy a used helmet with cracks, deep scratches, or unknown impact history. See our general helmet guide for certification and replacement detail.

Fitting With Long Hair

HairstyleFit Tip
Low ponytail or low braidWorks well; sits below the rear adjuster and under the helmet back.
High ponytail or bunUsually interferes with the helmet's back; move the style lower.
Loose long hairCan get caught in straps and block vision; tie it back.
Hair tiesUse soft elastic ties with no metal.

Fit steps:

  1. Style her hair as she will for games, then put the helmet on.
  2. The front should sit about one finger-width above the eyebrows.
  3. The helmet should not rock side to side or front to back when she shakes her head.
  4. Adjust the rear and side sizing so it's snug, then fasten the chin strap so it doesn't shift when you push up on the front.

Cage vs. Visor

Full face protection is the standard for youth players. Check the specific rule for her age group in USA Hockey's Rule 304, since the wording has changed over time. See safety requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do girls need a different helmet than boys?

No. Helmets are unisex. Fit by head circumference, adjust for hair, and confirm HECC certification.

How do I stop the helmet from sliding on a braid?

Move the braid or ponytail lower and to the center, and use the rear adjuster to tighten after styling.

When should the helmet be replaced?

After any significant impact, if there are cracks, or when the foam/padding is compressed or no longer fits.
